The Redondo Beach Police Department Annex building was sealed off Wednesday due to a potential hazmat contamination that was later traced to a blocked sewage pipe, police said.

Around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, personnel in the building detected an unusual odor in the office on the 200 block of North Pacific Coast Highway, between Vincent and Diamond Streets, according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

“Due to the unknown source of the odor, the building was evacuated and the Redondo Beach Fire Department responded to investigate,” the department said.

No other buildings in the vicinity were affected, but an adjacent parking lot was restricted at the time, according to police.

Officers were assisted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Division.

Around 10 a.m., the operation concluded with the cause being determined as a sewage pipe not draining properly. Redondo Beach Public Works was called to address the situation, police added.

The building was reopened and all personnel were allowed to return to work.
