Funeral services were pending Thursday for Signal Hill Police Chief Wayne Byerley, who died following a medical emergency at work Wednesday night.
“Chief Wayne Byerley’s leadership, optimism, and unwavering dedication to our community will leave a lasting legacy in Signal Hill,” Mayor Keir Jones said in a statement Thursday. “We are deeply grateful for his service and profoundly saddened by his loss.”
It was unclear how he died. He is survived by his wife and 15-year-old son.
Byerley had been chief of the Signal Hill Police Department since May 22, 2023. He was previously a captain for the Los Alamitos Police Department and spent 32 years with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
