Police sought the public’s assistance Wednesday in locating the driver responsible for striking an 80-year-old bicyclist in Long Beach, who later died at a hospital.

Officers responded to the intersection of Pleasant Street and Atlantic Avenue around 12:15 p.m. Monday to reports of a traffic collision involving a vehicle and bicyclist, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Detectives determined after a preliminary investigation that the bicyclist, later identified as Long Beach resident Enrique Barajas, was traveling north on Atlantic Avenue. He merged from the bike lane into the number one lane moments before a white SUV, heading in the same direction in the number two lane, sideswiped Barajas without stopping, they said.

Barajas was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead the following day.

Anyone with information regarding the fatal collision was urged to call LBPD Detective Johnson at 562-570-7355. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
