A dozen bottles of liquid methamphetamine concealed as dog shampoo were seized at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said Wednesday.
On April 1, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted an outbound shipment to Australia labeled “Assorted Dog Shampoos,” according to CBP. Inside the bottles, officers allegedly discovered a crystallized white substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.
The seizure was revealed to contain 17.41 pounds of liquid methamphetamine, with a potential street value in Australia estimated at $1.8 million, authorities added.
“This interception highlights CBP’s critical outbound mission in detecting, intercepting and seizing potent narcotics heading out of the United States, to countries where illegally imported drugs are sold at a premium” said Cheryl Davies, the CBP’s director of field operations in Los Angeles.
Citing the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, CBP officials said around 7.5% of the population in Australia has used methamphetamine in their lifetime.
“This significant seizure illustrates our officers’ vigilance, keen focus and commitment in disrupting transnational drug trafficking,” CBP LAX Area Port Director Andrew Douglas said.
