Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell authorized the release of the names of officers who responded to a domestic violence call in South Los Angeles which led to police shooting the suspect, authorities said Wednesday.

Four residents were rescued from a home after a 26-year-old armed suspect was shot by officers around 9 a.m. Saturday.

A caller reported that a suspect was armed with a gun and possibly suicidal in the 900 block of East 118th Drive, just west of Central Avenue and south of the Century (105) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Shamar Bennett, whom authorities say was armed with a gun and possibly seeking “suicide by police.”

While officers were at scene, screams could be heard from inside the house, the LAPD added.

Officers then entered the house, where they encountered Bennett with a firearm. An officer-involved shooting occurred, which injured the suspect.

Paramedics rushed Bennett to a hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to his lower right leg. His weapon, an AR-style pistol was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, police added.

Bennett was booked for corporal injury on a spouse/cohabitant.

Four others were rescued from the house, police said, and one woman was treated at the scene for injuries sustained during the domestic violence event.

The nature of the woman’s injuries was unclear.

The officers involved were identified as Matthew Martin and Martin Eudave.

No officers or other community members were injured in the shooting.
