Police in Long Beach Thursday were investigating a crash that took the life of a 15-year-old boy as he waited at a bus stop.

Officers were sent just before 3 p.m. Wednesday to investigate a report of a collision involving a pedestrian at Palo Verde Avenue and Carson Street, according to the LBPD.

“Long Beach Fire Department personnel provided medical aid and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries,” police said.

According to finding of a preliminary investigation, a 2010 Infiniti G37 was traveling west on Carson Street when it failed to stop for a red traffic signal at the intersection of Palo Verde Avenue. A 2010 Toyota Prius, traveling south on Palo Verde Avenue, meanwhile, entered the intersection on a green traffic light and the two vehicles collided.

“The force of the collision caused the Infiniti to skid and overturn,” according to a police statement. “As the Infiniti went onto the northwest sidewalk on Carson Street, the pedestrian sitting at the bus stop was struck.”

Police withheld the boy’s name because of his age.

The Prius driver, a 32-year-old man from Lakewood, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The driver of the Infiniti was taken to a hospital and reported to be in a stable condition.

Investigators believe speed was a factor in the collision, but it was not immediately clear if the Infiniti driver was cited or could face additional charges. The driver was said to be cooperating with the police investigation, police said.

Anyone with information about the crash was urged to call LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Ashley Van Holland at 562-570-7355.
