The Los Angeles Police Department Wednesday released the names of two officers involved in a shooting that left a suspect dead in East Hollywood.
The 27-year-old man allegedly drew a knife and moved against Rampart Division officers who responded to a possible burglary at 4:10 a.m. on June 19 in the 500 block of North Alexandria Avenue, between the Hollywood (101) Freeway and Beverly Boulevard.
The officers encountered the suspect, later identified as Victor Manuel Carrillo, who was reportedly trying to enter apartments, according to police.
Carrillo was spotted in the second-floor entrance of the apartment building, and he is alleged to have unleashed a barrage of items at officers below.
“Carrillo threw lumber, ceramic pots and other objects at the officers while armed with a knife, resulting in the discharge of less-lethal munitions,” according to the LAPD.
Carrillo then fled and allegedly forced his way through a window and into an occupied second-floor apartment.
“The officers forced entry into the apartment and were confronted by Carrillo, who was armed with a knife and metal chair, resulting in an officer-involved shooting and the discharge of an additional less-lethal munition,” according to the LAPD’s statement. “Carrillo was struck by gunfire and taken into custody without further incident. Officers rendered aid until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, who pronounced Carrillo deceased.”
Police did not say if more than one officer opened fire, how many shots were fired at the suspect, or how many times he was struck.
The officers involved were identified as Randy Jreisat and Edward Urquia.
An officer’s leg was injured in the lumber barrage, but he declined treatment. Two civilians sustained minor injuries while struggling with Carrillo when he tried to get into their apartment. One of them was treated at the scene and the other declined treatment, police said.
A knife, metal chair and lumber were recovered and booked as evidence.
The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division responded to the scene and continues to investigate the shooting.
