The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced Sunday it is scaling back the so-far unsuccessful search for a 60-year-old woman who was last seen a week ago hiking on the Angeles Crest Highway.
Monica Reza was last seen at 9:10 a.m. last Sunday at 6000 Foot Gate, according to the LASD.
“An extraordinary search was initiated that involved not only involved our Los Angeles County Search and Rescue teams, but numerous resources from throughout the state leveraging local, state and federal assets,” Crescenta Valley Station Acting Capt. Ryan A. Vienna said. “The use of forensic technology, photography, airships, canines and other specialized tools were utilized in this effort leaving nearly no available resource untapped.”
Missing Persons Unit detectives planned to continue search efforts as data and information allow, Vienna said.
“Our hearts go out to Monica’s family, friends, coworkers and the community who have shown great concern for her disappearance,” he said. “We appreciate the numerous members of the public who have reached out to get involved in the search. It is important to understand the area Monica went missing in can be highly technical and difficult for inexperienced hikers. Given this is an ongoing investigation, we would ask the public to avoid actively searching this area. On behalf of the family, we are conveying their request for privacy at this time.”
Reza is white, 4 feet, 11 inches tall, 101 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes, and was wearing a red long-sleeve shirt, green hiking pants and hiking shoes.
The department did not provide any information about Reza’s hiking experience or familiarity with the area.
Anyone who has seen Reza or knows of her whereabouts was asked to call the sheriff’s Missing Persons Unit at 323-890-5500. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
