Desert Hot Springs police issued nine citations and towed five vehicles during a DUI checkpoint over the weekend, authorities said Monday.

The checkpoint was conducted from 7 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday on North Indian Canyon Drive at 19th Avenue. Officers screened 644 vehicles but made no arrests.

“The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roadways,” said Sgt. Scott Hazen.

The next checkpoint will be held in August, according to Hazen.

Funding was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
