A pedestrian was fatally struck while walking on a Jurupa Valley street, but the circumstances remained unclear Friday.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was fatally injured about 9:25 p.m. Thursday on Van Buren Boulevard, just south of Etiwanda Avenue, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

The agency said the victim was in the roadway for unknown reasons when he was hit.

Paramedics arrived a short time later and pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

Sheriff’s officials said the motorist, who also was not identified, did not attempt to flee and spoke with patrol deputies, exhibiting no signs of intoxication.

The driver, who wasn’t hurt, was not arrested.

An autopsy was pending Friday on the pedestrian.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the sheriff’s Jurupa Valley station at 951-955-2600.
