Felony charges are expected to be filed Wednesday against one young man suspected of gunning down another during a dispute in Moreno Valley.
Jacob Nulen Necochea, 19, of Banning was arrested on suspicion of murder Friday following a Riverside County Sheriff’s Department investigation into the death of Angelo Leivas, who was also a 19-year-old from Banning.
Necochea is being held without bail at the Smith Correctional Facility.
The case has been submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
According to sheriff’s Sgt. Alberto Loureiro, the suspect and Leivas were involved in an unspecified confrontation as Necochea sat in his vehicle in the 13000 block of Day Street, near Eucalyptus Avenue, less than a mile east of Interstate 215, just after 4 a.m. Friday.
During the encounter, the suspect allegedly pulled a handgun and shot the victim several times, Loureiro said.
The sheriff’s sergeant alleged Necochea “fled the location prior to deputies’ arrival.”
Paramedics arrived minutes later and discovered Leivas gravely wounded. The young man was taken to nearby Riverside University Medical Center, where he died Friday morning.
“Deputies obtained a description of the suspect vehicle and, about an hour later, found it in Moreno Valley,” Loureiro said. “Deputies detained the driver (Necochea), who was the sole occupant.”
The suspect was questioned all day by Central Homicide Unit detectives, who formally arrested him at 5:30 p.m. Friday on suspicion of the alleged attack.
A possible motive or details regarding how the suspect and victim knew one another were not immediately disclosed.
