One person was in custody Monday after surrendering to police in connection with a hit-and-run collision that left a woman dead in Gardena.

Firefighters were sent at 10:23 p.m. Sunday to a report of a hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian near the intersection of South Western Avenue and 148th Street, near the popular West End Kitchen.

Gardena police and county fire department personnel found the woman in the street and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office identified her as Robin Butler, 42, of Compton.

“The driver of the vehicle fled the scene but later surrendered to Gardena police and was subsequently arrested,” according to a police statement.

The suspect’s name was not released.

The woman was with her son when the driver struck her, but he was not injured, and the fleeing driver left one of the vehicle’s bumpers and license plates behind, according to a broadcast report.

The crash was being investigated by the Gardena Police Department Traffic Bureau and anyone with additional information was urged to contact Sgt V. Gomez at 310-217-6122 or Investigator J. Zamudio at 310-217-6189.
