A woman in her 40s was struck and killed Saturday by a hit-and-run vehicle in Palmdale.

The crash was reported at 4:13 a.m. Saturday in the area of 20th Street East and Avenue S, according to a watch commander at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Palmdale station.

Investigators learned a light blue 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis was westbound on Avenue S in the left lane and struck the pedestrian, who was pushing a shopping cart across Avenue S on a red light. The driver continued out of view without stopping to render aid to the pedestrian or call 911, sheriff’s officials said.

Arriving paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Deputies located the Grand Marquis and its driver at a Palmdale address, officials said. The driver was arrested for suspicion of multiple felony charges and the vehicle was impounded for evidence.

Investigators said alcohol was a factor in the fatal crash.

Anyone with information was asked to call Detective Knutson of the Palmdale Sheriff Station at 661-272-2596.
