One person was killed Wednesday when a Toyota Prius rear-ended a big rig and became pinned underneath the trailer on the San Fernando (210) Freeway in the Sunland neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The crash was reported at 2:13 a.m. on the right shoulder of the westbound San Fernando Freeway just east of Sunland/Foothill Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

One person was confirmed dead inside the gray Prius, CHP Officer Sergio Garcia told City News Service.

The big rig’s trailer was fully loaded with produce, the CHP said. It claimed the trailer had more than 3 million pounds, and that absorbent was needed to remove oil from the right shoulder.

Traffic was stopped at Lowell Avenue until the CHP issued a SigAlert at 3:16 a.m. shutting down lanes 3 and 4 for the investigation and clean-up. Lane 3 was reopened at 4:27 a.m.

All lanes were reopened about 6:45 a.m.
