The Los Angeles School Police Department was scheduled to have extra patrols for the campus of Sepulveda Middle School Thursday, after the shooting of a 17-year-old teen that occurred in front of the middle school that prompted a brief lockdown.

A 13 -year-old juvenile believed to be a student at the middle school was named as a suspect, LAPD Officer Rosario Cervantes confirmed to City News Service.

The victim was shot in the thigh and was taken to a hospital in unknown condition, according to media reports from the scene.

The shooting “occurred off campus adjacent to Sepulveda Middle School,” Officer Jorge Herrera of the LASPD said.

NBC 4 reported the victim was not a student at Sepulveda Middle School, but he was walking toward the school to pick up a younger sibling. The 17-year-old victim did not appear to be targeted by the shooter, but police said there was an altercation before shots were fired, according to NBC 4.

Officers responded at 3:09 p.m. Wednesday to the 15300 block of Plummer Street, two blocks east of Sepulveda Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

”Due to the proximity to our campus, we placed the school on lockdown and requested assistance from the Los Angeles School Police Department,” the district spokesperson said. “After consultation with school police, the lockdown has since been lifted.”

Additional officers will be patrolling Sepulveda Middle School after a shooting near the North Hills campus left one person injured. The injured person was not a student at Sepulveda Middle School, according to a Los Angeles Unified School District spokesperson, but media reports from the scene described him as a juvenile who was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. There will also be resources for students who may request additional mental health support.

“Region North will be providing extra staff to support the safety and wellbeing of our school community,” the spokesperson said.
