Firefighters put out a non-injury fire in a Boyle Heights apartment building Friday.
The fire was reported about 7:30 a.m. at 229 N. Soto St., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The first arriving crews encountered smoke coming from an apartment on the second floor of the two-story center hallway building.
Crews forced their way in and had the fire out in a mere 14 minutes.
Thirty-six firefighters responded in all.
No one was found inside the apartment.
“Due to the heavy smoke conditions in the second floor hallway, firefighters instructed residents to shelter in place while they completed fire extinguishment and smoke removal,” said LAFD spokeswoman Jennifer Middleton.
Crews were expected to remain at the scene for smoke removal and to release residents from shelter in place orders when safe, she said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately apparent, Middleton said.
