A man allegedly armed with a knife was wounded by police who opened fire after encountering the suspect Friday inside a home.

Officers were sent about 4:50 a.m. Friday to investigate a possible burglary in progress in the area of Normandie Avenue and 78th Street, east of Manchester Square, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Upon their arrival, officers heard screaming inside the residence,” according to a department statement. “Due to the exigency, officers forced entry into location.”

The officers found the suspect, a man described as being in his 40s armed with a knife, and the victim in the same room.

“The officers attempted to de-escalate using verbal commands and when the suspect refused to comply, the officers utilized the 40mm less-lethal launcher, twice, which had no effect,” according to the LAPD.

When the non-compliant suspect made a move toward the victim, at least one officer opened fire, striking the suspect, who was taken into custody and was in critical condition when transported to a hospital.

Officers treated him for an injured hand before he was taken from the scene, the LAPD reported.

No officers or residents were injured.

“We are still in the early stages of this investigation as there are still multiple witnesses to interview, to include the officers involved, as well as video to review and evidence to examine,” according to an LAPD statement.
