A man suspected of attempted murder led Beverly Hills police on a short pursuit Sunday until colliding with another vehicle and barricading inside a pickup truck with a hostage.
The situation began about 1:30 p.m. Sunday when the Beverly Hills Police Department received an alert that a gray Ford pickup truck wanted in a felony by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was located by Automated License Plate Recognition in their jurisdiction, police said.
Officers spotted the vehicle in the area of San Vicente and Beverly boulevards and attempted a traffic stop but the pickup took off, police said. The pursuit ended when the driver collided into a second vehicle around Burton Way and Robertson Boulevard and officers surrounded it.
As of 5:30 p.m., the standoff continued with patrol cars and a police Bearcat armored vehicle surrounding the pickup and a sun shield set inside the truck’s front window.
ABC7 reported the suspect was wanted for attempted murder and had a hostage inside the truck.
“The suspect is armed and is holding a hostage inside a vehicle,” the LASD said. “The suspect is wanted for additional charges in the city of @cityofbevhills.”
Officials told KCAL that the suspect struggled with deputies who tried to detain him near 106th Street and Hawthorne Boulevard in the Lennox area and he injured one deputy as he fled in his truck.
Officers were attempting to negotiate in hopes the suspect will get out of the vehicle, police said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department announced about 6:30 p.m. it had sent deputies from its Special Enforcement Bureau to take over tactical command. It identified the suspect as a man.
Area residents and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
