Privacy issues will be the focus of a virtual forum being held Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission to hear feedback from residents on the sheriff’s department’s automated license plate reader operations and policies.
The forum follows a move by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in September that directed the commission to hold such a meeting.
” Community input gathered during this forum will help inform the commission’s ongoing oversight efforts and ensure that community voices remain central to this work,” according to a news release from the commission.
Forum speakers include Hans Johnson and Sharmaine Moseley of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission; Dara Williams of the Los Angeles County Inspector General’s Office; UCLA School of Law Professor Melodi Dincer; Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Commander Ernest Bille; and Angelica Salas of the Coalition for Humane Immigrate Rights.
According to the Commission, public concern has been growing about unchecked use of surveillance technologies across Los Angeles County, with immigrant communities particularly affected.
“During this forum, attendees will hear from key stakeholders and subject matter experts, and have the opportunity to pose questions, raise concerns, and share first-hand experiences and insights to help shape the county’s conversations and recommendations on how the Sheriff’s Department uses Automated License Plate Readers and safeguards data gathered from this technology,” according to a commission statement.
