A 41-year-old inmate who walked away from a conservation camp in the Mojave Desert in Los Angeles County is back behind bars Wednesday after he was apprehended by corrections authorities.
Francisco Cervantes was taken into custody in Fontana by California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Office of Correctional Safety special agents without incident at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, the department announced.
Cervantes was taken to the California Institution for Men in Chino, according to the department.
Cervantes was discovered unaccounted for at the Fenner Canyon Conservation Camp in Valyermo at 8 a.m. Saturday, the department reported.
Cervantes was received from San Bernardino County on May 21, 2024, while serving a five-year, eight-month sentence for assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, according to the department.
Corrections officials say 99% of those who leave an adult institution, camp or community-based program without permission are apprehended.
