A man was killed Monday when a silver sedan crashed into the center divider on the 101 Freeway in Studio City.

The crash was reported at 2:14 a.m. Monday on the southbound Ventura (101) Freeway where the Ventura Freeway continues as the 134 Freeway and intersects the 101, which becomes the Hollywood Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A witnesses told the CHP the car was catching fire and that good Samaritans were trying to get the driver out of the vehicle.

Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters worked to free the driver, who was eventually pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said.

“LAFD performed an extrication of the patient,” said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jamie Stewart. “One approximately 60-year-old male patient has been determined deceased and beyond medical intervention.”

An investigation was underway to determine why the car crashed into the center divider wall.

The CHP issued a SigAlert at 2:38 a.m. shutting down all southbound 101 lanes and diverting traffic onto the eastbound 134. All lanes were reopened at about 5:35 a.m.
