A brush fire that erupted Thursday on the south end of Perris scorched 24 acres in open terrain between housing tracts before it was stopped.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 3:25 p.m. Thursday in the area of Pinnacle Street and Ethanac Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that multiple engine, hand and bulldozer crews were sent to the location and encountered flames burning at a moderate rate through medium vegetation in the direction of a dirt road.

Two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter were summoned and initiated runs on the brusher at 4 p.m., slowing its advance.

Utilizing dirt roads throughout the area as natural fire breaks, firefighters made rapid progress establishing tentative containment lines, and at 4:40 p.m., the blaze’s forward rate of spread was halted, according to reports from the scene.

All aircraft departed the location moments later.

Full containment of the fire was anticipated by nightfall.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
