A man who was the subject of a foot pursuit tried to elude police by swimming offshore in the Pacific Palisades area Thursday, but after dog-paddling for well over an hour, he was fished from Santa Monica Bay and taken into custody.

The pursuit of the suspect, who was wanted for an undisclosed felony, began about 7:15 a.m. Thursday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The suspect entered the ocean in a bid to swim to freedom, but soon found himself surrounded by lifeguards’ and sheriff’s department boats, about 100 yards off Will Rogers State Beach.

Two lifeguards on paddle boards were on either side of the man as he bobbed in the water, and a third swam out from shore at one point before deputies with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Marina del Rey Station reeled the bare-bottomed suspect onto their vessel around 9:15 a.m.
