Authorities Monday publicly identified a 78-year-old woman who was killed in a multi-vehicle hit-and-run crash in North Long Beach in which speed and alcohol were suspected as factors.
The crash occurred about 2:40 p.m. Saturday in the 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue, the Long Beach Police Department reported.
A speeding northbound 2019 Volvo on Atlantic Avenue struck a 2004 Chevrolet as it was turning onto Atlantic Place from Atlantic Avenue, police said.
“The Volvo then struck two other occupied stationary vehicles waiting at the intersection,” according to police. “The collision caused the Chevrolet to overturn.”
A woman inside the Chevrolet was pronounced dead at the scene.
She was identified by the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office as Lionila Yerena, whose place of residence was not immediately available.
Paramedics took the man who was driving the Chevrolet to a hospital. His condition was not clear.
“The occupants of the two stationary vehicles, two female adults and two children, were not injured in the collision,” according to police. “The male adult driver of the Volvo initially fled the scene, then returned a short time later and was taken into custody.”
Compton resident Adalberto Delgado-Perez, 38, was booked into the Long Beach City Jail on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury. His bail was set at $100,000.
Police said speed and impaired driving appeared to be contributing factors in the crash.
