A 38-year-old man suspected of possessing child sexual abuse material and an assault weapon was out on bail Thursday.
Matthew Joseph Mills was booked into the Benoit Detention Center on suspicion of child sexual abuse material-related charges and possession of an assault weapon, according to the Indio Police Department.
Bail information was not immediately available.
Authorities received a “CyberTip” from Kik, a social media platform, on June 10, 2025 regarding a user who allegedly had multiple videos and images of graphic material involving children, police said.
After a yearlong investigation, a search warrant was obtained upon finding an address associated with the suspect’s account. It was in the 41400 block of Perdro Buff Drive in Bermuda Dunes, where authorities allegedly found an illegal assault rifle, police said.
A joint operation involving the department, Riverside County Regional Computer and Technology Crime Task Force, Major Crimes Unit and Special Enforcement Bureau Special Weapons and Tactics team located Mills and took him into custody Friday as he was leaving work.
