The fifth annual Afterschool Awards, which recognize students in preschool through ninth grade in the Southland and elsewhere for exceptional after-school activities in community service, arts, science and sports, is accepting entries through June.
Open to students throughout the country, the contest awards a $5,000 cash scholarship to a winner in each of the four categories for extracurricular activities during the 3-to-6 p.m. weekday time period.
Students can enter in more than one category.
“The Afterschool Awards, which help turn educational goals into a reality, continue to gain momentum every year,” said Adam Russell, a co- producer of the contest. “The excitement is shared not only by students but with parents, teachers, coaches and others who understand and appreciate the value of youth participating in extracurricular activities. We are looking forward to a record number of entries this year.”
The winners are required to utilize the cash reward to further their academic studies.
Entries are being accepted through June 30. Entry information and contest guidelines can be found at www.afterschoolawards.com.
“In addition to recognizing the winners, the contest is intended to further stimulate and motivate younger kids to participate in positive after- school activities in areas such as community service, music and arts, science and sports,” Russell said. “It is so rewarding to acknowledge all of these special kids for their hard work, dedication and passion as they deservedly take pride in themselves while inspiring others.”
Voting in each category will take place online from July 4 through Aug. 9, followed by an Afterschool Awards webcast announcing the winners on or before Aug. 21.
