The chancellor of the Long Beach-based California State University on Tuesday applauded a California budget deal that will direct another $59 million to the system.
The budget agreement between Gov. Jerry Brown and state legislative leaders includes an additional $59 million for the CSU system — $97 million over the original amount proposed in January — and another $25 million for the University of California system.
“This investment expands opportunity and access to quality-degree programs, supports hiring more faculty and staff, and enables the university to scale the programs and services that increase degree-completion,” CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White said.
“This investment in CSU’s students, faculty and staff serves the public good as a wise investment in the fabric and future of our state — which depends on a knowledge-based economy to provide social mobility for all Californians.”
Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, said the budget helps reverse cuts made during the recent recession while “rewarding hard work and making targeted investments in California’s future.”
“This budget strikes a responsible balance between strengthening our long-term fiscal foundation and investing right now in the economy of today and the work force of tomorrow,” he said.
