A threat on a Twitter account Thursday prompted a lockdown at El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, and a male student was detained for questioning, authorities said.

Deputies learned of the threat shortly before 8 a.m., according to the sheriff’s department.

“A Twitter account, allegedly belonging to a student from El Rancho High School, sent a message out earlier in the morning indicating the student planned to ‘shoot up the school’ with a firearm,” a sheriff’s statement said.

“He also indicated he wanted to bomb the school. Investigators identified the account holder as a student currently enrolled at the school,” the department said.

The school was placed on lockdown, and the student was located on campus, authorities said.

“He was safely detained by Pico Rivera (Station) sheriff’s deputies without incident,” the department said. “He was not in possession of a weapon at the time of his detention. No students or faculty were injured during this incident. Investigators determined there no longer was a threat to campus safety.”

The lockdown was then lifted, authorities reported shortly before 11 a.m. The investigation was continuing.
