U.S. Army Maj. Nick Duncan will be honored as the Military Hero of the Game Sunday when the Los Angeles Dodgers complete a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves at Dodger Stadium.

Duncan is a U.S. Military Academy graduate who was commissioned in 2002 and trained as a CH-47 helicopter pilot.

While serving in Afghanistan in 2005, his aircraft was caught in an unpredictable dust storm forcing an emergency landing. However, one aircraft on the mission, whose call sign was Windy25, crashed in the storm, killing 18.

Duncan and his wife Stacey, a decorated Army veteran, are among the co-founders of the Windy25 Memorial Fund, which assists families of the troops and civilian contractors killed in the Windy25 crash. It annually conducts a 5K fundraising run in Las Vegas.

Duncan is a nuclear and counter-proliferation officer and is pursuing a doctorate in nuclear engineering at the Colorado School of Mines.

The first pitch will be thrown by Keith Hernandez, a Kings County Fire Department fire apparatus engineer undergoing treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer.
