Viewing parties for the telecasts of Sunday’s 2-0 United States victory over Netherlands in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup final were held at Banc of California Stadium’s Northwest Plaza and various other locations in Los Angeles County.
The game from Groupama Stadium in Decines-Charpieu, France, a suburb of Lyon, began at 8 a.m. and was televised in English by Fox and in Spanish by Telemundo.
Parties organized by various chapters of American Outlaws, a nationwide support group for the U.S. men’s and women’s national soccer teams, were held in the following locations:
— Legends Sports Bar, 5236 E. Second St., Long Beach;
— Lucky Baldwin’s Pub, 17 S. Raymond Ave., Pasadena;
— Q’s Billiard Club, 11835 Wilshire Blvd., Brentwood;
— 1739 Public House, 1739 N. Vermont Ave., Los Feliz; and
— Underground Pub & Grill, 1332 Hermosa Ave., Hermosa Beach.
Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy hosted a watch party at Tom’s Urban at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.
The defending World Cup champion Americans were first in the rankings compiled by FIFA, soccer’s international governing body. Netherlands was ranked eighth.
Both teams had won all six of their games in the tournament. The U.S. wound up outscoring its opponents 26-3, including a 13-0 victory over Thailand in its opener June 11.
The Netherlands had outscored its opponents 11-3, including a 2-0 victory over Italy in a quarterfinal June 29 and a 1-0 victory over Sweden in a semifinal Wednesday.
The U.S. captured a record fourth Women’s World Cup title. Germany is the only other nation with more than one title, winning the 2003 and 2007 tournaments.
The U.S also joined Germany as the only back-to-back champions. The Women’s World Cup has been played every four years since 1991.
The U.S. roster includes two former UCLA standouts — defender Abby Dahlkemper and midfielder Samantha Mewis — and two forwards who played on the high school level in Los Angeles County — Alex Morgan (Diamond Bar) and Christen Press (Chadwick).
Morgan and Press are among 12 U.S. players who were also on the 2015 team.
There will also be watch parties for the CONCACAF Gold Cup final between the U.S. and Mexican men’s national soccer teams, at Legends Sports Bar, Lucky Baldwin’s Pub, Q’s Billiard Club, 1739 Public House and Underground Pub & Grill.
The 6 p.m. game from Chicago will air on cable’s FS1 and Univision Deportes Network and the Spanish-language broadcast network Univision.
