Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer and 22 other prosecutors from around the country announced Wednesday they are teaming up as part of a coalition working to curb gun violence.
The Prosecutors Against Gun Violence group — founded by Feuer and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. — includes prosecutors from other New York boroughs, as well as major cities like Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Houston and Las Vegas.
Other city attorneys hail from Miami, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Portland, Queens, San Antonio, San Francisco and Seattle.
The group is planning a national gun violence prevention summit in Atlanta, from Oct. 21-22, that is aimed at giving prosecutors a forum for exchanging ideas on best practices in prosecuting gun crimes.
Topics of discussion at the event are expected to include gang violence and weapons trafficking, and exploration of gun violence’s connections to domestic violence and mental health issues.
“Together, prosecutors across our nation can make a major impact on the gun violence afflicting our communities,” Feuer said.
“Our members will draw from our colleagues’ most effective strategies and join forces to advance policies that can save lives. Prosecutors have expertise and credibility that are hard to dismiss.”
Said Vance: “For prosecutors, gun violence is not a partisan issue. It’s a public health and safety crisis that claims lives and destabilizes communities in every jurisdiction in America. By coming together to share intelligence and advocate for pragmatic, nonpartisan solutions, law enforcement officials can achieve lasting progress on gun violence.”
