What can Eric Garcetti learn from mayors of other big western cities?
The Los Angeles mayor wasn’t speculating before the West Coast Mayors Summit got under way in San Francisco Monday.
Homelessness was undoubtedly at the top of the list as Garcetti and other mayors were slated to discuss a number of challenges they face and develop strategies on ways to cooperate.
This is the second summit of its kind, as Garcetti met last year in December with mayors from San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Oregon and Eugene, Oregon to collaborate on issues including climate change and reducing homelessness.
This year’s summit also includes mayors from Honolulu, San Jose, Sacramento and Oakland, and will also include a focus on homelessness.
After last year’s summit, the mayors committed to data collection on homelessness, sharing of best practices and signed a joint statement seeking support from the federal government on homeless issues. They also made a pledge to cut carbon emissions by 80 percent in their respective cities by 2050.
