Los Angeles City Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez will celebrate her first 100 days in office by bringing awareness to National Fire Prevention Month, according to her office.

Rodriguez plans to join members of the Los Angeles Fire Department and the nonprofit MySafe:LA in knocking on the doors of Sylmar residents Saturday to provide free smoke detectors and to connect with them about city services available through MyLA311.

The councilwoman also will honor members of the LAFD, the Los Angeles Police Department and other first responders to the devastating La Tuna fire that burned nearly 7,200 acres in early September.

The event will take place Saturday at the Discovery Cube Los Angeles science center at 1 p.m.

Sylmar is in the northeast San Fernando Valley near where the La Tuna fire burned and is a neighborhood prone to brush fires because of its proximity to the Verdugo Mountains.

“The councilwoman wanted to use this as an opportunity to really promote fire prevention, especially after the La Tuna fire, in the next closest neighborhood in our district (that) is prone to fires. Sylmar has a lot of forest fires, and a lot of brush areas that have not been cleared, and it is really hilly over there,” said Tran Le, a spokeswoman for Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is a former Public Works commissioner who defeated Karo Torossian in a May runoff election to represent the 7th Council District. The seat had been empty since September of last year when former Councilman Felipe Fuentes stepped down to become a lobbyist.
