Metrolink will join other local transit agencies and offer free rides across its system Wednesday to commemorate California Clean Air Day and help residents reduce their carbon footprints.
Celebrated Oct. 2, Clean Air Day is billed as a day of action to encourage individuals and organizations to do their part — big or small — in addressing air pollution. By offering free rides, Metrolink hopes commuters will travel on rail and explore alternative modes of transportation other than their cars.
“We are proud to participate in this statewide initiative and offer free rides to encourage others to join us in taking steps that improve our region’s air quality,” city of Highland Mayor Pro Tem Larry McCallon, who also serves as the board chair of Metrolink, said in a statement.
“Our commitment to a more sustainable future is reflected in our use of Tier 4 locomotives and renewable fuel, which contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment,” McCallon said. “By raising awareness and inspiring collective action to tackle climate challenges, we aim to make a lasting impact on our communities and planet.”
California Clean Air Day is one of three Metrolink free-ride days throughout the year. No ticket is required for travel. Passengers can simply board any Metrolink or Arrow train from any station.
The transit agency is also encouraging customers to take the clean air pledge, as well as support its campaign to purchase Tier 4 locomotives — which meet the latest Environmental Protection Agency emissions standards and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 85% compared to earlier models.
In 2023, Metrolink set a new post-pandemic ridership record of 26,556 boardings on California Clean Air Day, according to the agency.
L.A. Metro, Ventura County Transportation Commission buses, Orange County Transportation Authority transit and San Bernardino County Transportation Authority commuter services — Omnitrans, Victor Valley Transit Authority, Mountain Transit, Basin Transit, and Needles Area Transit — will also offer free rides.
