The county Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a $41.25 million five-year contract with the government of Quebec for the continued lease of two SuperScooper water-dropping aircraft that have become critical tools for battling Southland brush fires.
The bright yellow CL-415 air tankers are coveted for their versatility in battle brush fires, notably their ability to skim along lakes or other bodies of water and scoop up 1,600 gallons of water in 12 seconds.
Los Angeles County’s existing lease for the aircraft with Quebec’s Service Aerien Gouvernemental was set to expire on Wednesday.
“The SuperScoopers play a critical role and enhance the (Consolidated Fire Protection District of Los Angeles County’s) fire suppression capabilities during the critical months of LA County’s wildfire season,” county Fire Chief Anthony Marrone wrote in a letter to the board recommending approval of the contract. “SAG will be entering its 33rd year of service in Los Angeles County, during which they have provided superior performances during many challenging fire seasons.
“SAG’s flight crews are vastly familiar with Los Angeles County topography, water scoop locations and the policies and procedures that are inherent to the district’s aerial firefighting model.”
The aircraft are based at Van Nuys Airport.
