To the surprise of no one, the finale of “The Hunger Games” film series easily dominated theaters over the weekend, knocking James Bond out of the top spot, according to final figures released Monday.
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” opened with $102.7 million, putting all other films to shame from Friday through Sunday, according to box office tracker Rentrak. Although it put up gaudy numbers, the film still fell short of its predecessor, “Mockingjay, Part 1,” which opened with $121.9 million.
The latest James Bond film, “Spectre,” earned another $15 million over the weekend to place a distant second. The film has earned $154.1 million in its three weeks of release.
The animated film “The Peanuts Movie” collected $13.2 million to push its three-week take to just more than $99 million.
Seth Rogen’s holiday comedy “The Night Before” debuted in fourth place with $9.9 million, followed by another debut, “The Secret in Their Eyes,” which opened with $6.6 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Love The Coopers” ($4.1 million); “The Martian” ($3.8 million); “Spotlight” ($3.5 million); “The 33” ($2.3 million); and “Bridge Of Spies” ($2 million).
