Did Aaron Hernandez, the former Patriots star, kill himself in a Massachusetts prison cell Wednesday morning? Or was he murdered?

That debate exploded within hours of news that the convicted killer’s lawyer, Jose Baez, disputed the suicide-by-hanging story.

“We’re told Baez believes this could be a murder either by inmates or the folks who run the prison,” said TMZ Sports. “Baez says the family is ‘devastated’ and does not believe Aaron was in a frame of mind to take his life.”

The Boston Globe, with the most comprehensive coverage, quoted the former player’s agent, Brian Murphy, as saying on Twitter: “Absolutely no chance he took his own life. Chico was not a saint, but my family and I loved him, and he would never take his own life.”

The Globe also noted how a jury Friday acquitted Hernandez on charges of killing Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston in July 2012. Hernandez, 27, already was serving life without parole for killing Odin L. Lloyd in 2013.

“Hernandez apparently took his own life on the day many of his former teammates will be honored at the White House for winning Super Bowl 51,” the Globe said.
