“The Hitman’s Bodyguard” bested “Annabelle: Creation” for the second week in a row to take the number one spot at the North American box office this weekend, according to estimated figures.
The action comedy starring Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds was projected to take in $10 million Friday through Sunday in theaters in the United States and Canada, the industry tracking group comScore reported.
“Annabelle: Creation” took in a estimated $7.3 million in its third weekend in theaters.
This will be the slowest summer weekend at the domestic box office in three years, with total receipts of around $67 million expected, according to the industry tracking group comScore.
Part of that was attributed to Saturday night’s pay-per-view boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and UFC champion Conor McGregor. Many people stayed home or went to a bar to watch the fight. The match was also shown at movie theaters across the country for a special premium price of up to $40, and proved popular enough to claim the No. 9 spot on the weekend box office listing.
The animated adventure tale “Leap!” opened in third place with $5 million. “Wind River” was fourth with $4.4 million, and “Logan Lucky” was fifth with $4.3 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in North America this weekend were “Dunkirk” ($3.9 million), “Spider-Man: Homecoming” ($2.7 million), “Birth of the Dragon” ($2.5 million), “Mayweather vs. McGregor” ($2.4 million) and “The Emoji Movie” ($2.3 million).
