“Another weekend, another sequel” is the box office story Sunday, as “Maze Runner: The Death Cure” takes the box office championship with a $23.5 million debut.
The third installment in the “Maze Runner” franchise stars Kaya Scodelario and Dylan O’Brien, and is directed by Wes Ball, who also directed the previous two installments.
“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” dropped to second place, with an estimated $16.4 million in tickets sales this weekend. It has taken in an estimated $338 million over six weeks.
A Hollywood rarity, a western, was in third place. “Hostiles” opened in wide release in third place, with $10.2 million in estimated weekend sales, after opening at a few theaters in December to qualify for this year’s Academy Awards.
A musical, “The Greatest Showman,” held down fourth place with a $9.5 million weekend, and $126.5 million in sales over six weeks.
“The Post” was in fifth place, with $8.9 million this weekend and $58.5 million total.
Rounding out the top 10 movies this weekend, as reported by the studios and gathered by comScore, were “12 Strong” ($8.6 million), “Den of Thieves” ($8.4 million), “The Shape of Water” ($5.7 million), “Paddington 2” ($5.8 million) and a Bollywood film, “Padmaavat” (debuting at $4.2 million).
