A horror movie called “A Quiet Place” made some noise at the cineplex ticket booths this weekend, and “rang up a thunderous $50 million debut,” a movie analyst said Sunday.

That’s the second biggest opening of 2018 so far, behind the “Black Panther” juggernaut. The new Paramount picture stars John Krasinski and cast members Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe.

“A Quiet Place … absolutely went above and beyond opening weekend expectations,” said comScore analyst Paul Dergarabedian. The movie, he said, was highly original in concept and was getting good word-of-mouth.

In second place, Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” was on track to sell $25 million in tickets in this, its second weekend, and was predicted to sell $96.9 million domestically over 11 days.

An R-rated comedy called “Blockers” debuted this weekend with an anticipated $21.4 million in sales. It tells the tale of a group of suburban parents trying to keep their teenaged daughters’ hormones in check on prom night.

“Black Panther” was in fourth place, with an estimated $8.4 million in its eighth weekend and $665.3 million so far in North America. It is now the third highest grossing film of all-time in North America, as it passed “Jurassic World” and “Titanic.”

And fifth place was held by a religious movie — “I Can Only Imagine” — with an expected $8.4 million take this weekend, and $69 million over four weeks.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “Tyler Perry’s Acrimony” ($8 million), “Chappaquiddick” (opening with $6.2 million), “Sherlock Gnomes” ($5.6 million), “Pacific Rim Uprising” ($4.9 million) and “Isle of Dogs” ($4.6 million).
