A preliminary hearing began Monday for a 18-year-old former Palos Verdes High School student accused of driving the getaway car in a fatal South Los Angeles shooting, with testimony centering on whether the defendant was affiliated with a gang.
Cameron Terrell is facing one count of murder in the Oct. 1 shooting death of 21-year-old Justin Holmes, plus two counts of attempted murder and a gang allegation.

HERMOSA BEACH (CNS) – Police descended on a Hermosa Beach apartment complex Monday, believing a suspect with a weapon was holed up in a bathroom, but after a nearly two-hour standoff, the person inside was determined to be unarmed.
Los Angeles County fire crews initially responded around 4 p.m. to a report of smoke coming from a unit at the apartment complex in the 400 block of Herondo Street. When they arrived, however, they were unable to enter the complex because Hermosa Beach police were inside dealing with what was believed to be a possibly armed and barricaded suspect.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Federal agents Monday raided the New York office of President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, who is targeted in a Los Angeles lawsuit by porn actress Stormy Daniels over $130,000 he paid to prevent her from discussing her alleged decade-ago affair with Trump.
The raid of Michael Cohen’s office came on the heels of renewed court filings in Los Angeles by Daniels’ attorney, who wants to depose Trump and Cohen about the alleged 2006 affair and the 2016 non-disclosure agreement, which Daniels claims is invalid because Trump never signed it.

Downtown Los Angeles broke a 128-year-old record by reaching a 95 degrees, topping the record for the date of 94 set in 1890, according to the National Weather Service.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A former JetBlue Airways flight attendant who tried to smuggle nearly 60 pounds of cocaine onto a plane at Los Angeles International Airport in her carry-on baggage was sentenced Monday to time served — about two years — by a federal judge who cited her crucial testimony in the prosecution of her supplier.
Marsha Gay Reynolds, 33, will likely be released from custody in time to return home to Queens, New York, with her parents, who attended the sentencing hearing in downtown Los Angeles.

RESEDA (CNS) – A man who led police on a chase in an allegedly stolen SUV was fatally shot by police in Reseda Monday, and two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the confrontation.
The shooting occurred about 10:30 a.m. near Hamlin Street and Corbin Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

EAST LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A man in his 20s was stabbed multiple times on a public bus by another passenger in East Los Angeles Monday, and the victim was not expected to survive.
The suspect, described only as a man in his mid-30s to early 40s, got off the bus after the stabbing and fled on foot, according to the sheriff’s department.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Los Angeles County prosecutors declined to file a felony case against Trey Songz, who was arrested last month on suspicion of domestic violence, instead referring the matter to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office for consideration of a misdemeanor case against the rapper.
Frank Mateljan with the City Attorney’s Office said the matter is under review and no filing decision has been made yet.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A 27-year-old gang member was sentenced Monday to more than 15 years behind bars for his role in a conspiracy in which three street gangs came together under the control of an imprisoned Mexican Mafia member to run drug sales along the Los Angeles River from Elysian Park to Burbank.
Giovanni “Suspect” Olvera, of Atwater Village, pleaded guilty last June to one federal count each of racketeering conspiracy, drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – The horror-thriller “A Quiet Place” was anything but quiet at North American theaters over the weekend, debuting atop the box office, according to final figures released Monday.
The thriller opened with $50.2 million, according to box-office tracker comScore. That more than doubled the weekend take of Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” which settled into second place with $24.6 million.

RESEDA (CNS) – A Los Angeles Unified School District school bus with about 30 people aboard was involved in a minor collision in Reseda Monday, but no serious injuries were reported.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Tommy Chong and the comic’s son were sued Monday by a licensing company that alleges the pair cut them out of the profits generated from a marketing plan the plaintiffs established to sell marijuana products and accessories.
Evergreen Licensing LLC and its founder, Brian Vecchio, name Tommy and Paris Chong as defendants in the Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, along with Jon-Paul Cowen, described in the complaint as a business associate of the Chongs.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – Los Angeles County prosecutors cited the statute of limitations in declining to file charges against film director/screenwriter James Toback involving sex-related allegations by five women, documents released Monday show.
In charge evaluation worksheets, prosecutors wrote that Toback — who has denied wrongdoing — “potentially violated” state laws dealing with sexual battery, battery and indecent exposure in alleged incidents involving four women between 1978 and 2008, but said the statute of limitations has expired.

SANTA ANA (CNS) – A 31-year-old veteran got out of his friend’s car, gunned down someone who “punked” him in an Anaheim park and then told his Army buddy he “took care of it,” a prosecutor told jurors Monday, while the defendant’s attorney argued his client suffered from combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder.
Adam Jay Stone of Anaheim, who is charged with murder with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a gun, faces up to 50 years to life in prison if convicted of killing 29-year-old Alexander McMoore on Jan. 7, 2015, at Twila Reid Park.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A man who says he is a lifelong lay member of the Catholic Church is suing the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, alleging that intimate photos of him with a former girlfriend were wrongfully distributed on social media sites and to other parishes, causing him to contemplate suicide.
Antonio Cailan filed the lawsuit Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of himself and his nonprofit organization, Together in Christ Catholic Charismatic Foundation, seeking unspecified damages on allegations of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and a violation of the state Civil Code. Also named as defendants are Father Jim Clarke, Father Ramon Valera, vicar for clergy Alex Aclan, Cailan’s former love interest, Jonna Malabanan, and two other individual archdiocese members, Rose Leano and Natividad Inocencio.

LOS ANGELES (CNS) – A power outage darkened half of the courtrooms in the Criminal Courts Building in downtown Los Angeles Monday, delaying court hearings and prompting officials to block the entrances to the building.
Power went out shortly before 10:30 a.m. in about half of the courtrooms and offices in the building at 210 W. Temple St. A court employee in the building indicated that a generator had failed, but there was no official word on the cause of the outage.
