The Universal horror flick “Candyman” debuted atop the North American box office over the weekend, gathering just more than $22 million, according to final figures released Monday.

The $22 million haul was enough for the much-anticipated supernatural slasher film, directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Jordan Peele, to push 20th Century Studios’ “Free Guy” into second place, according to box-office tracker Comscore.

“Free Guy,” an action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds, earned $13.2 million between Friday and Sunday to take second place, while raising its three-week total to $78.9 million.

The kid-friendly “Paw Patrol” took third place with $6.6 million.

Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” collected another $5 million over the weekend, pushing it over the $100 million mark for its five weeks in theaters.

“Don’t Breathe 2,” Sony’s sequel to the hit 2016 thriller, placed fifth with $2.9 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Respect” ($2.2 million); “The Suicide Squad” ($2 million); “The Protégé” ($1.6 million); “The Night House” ($1.2 million); and “Old” ($840,810).
