“American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” will each carry a leading five nominations into Sunday’s beach-side presentation of the 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards, including nods for best feature film.
Also nominated in the best feature category are “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The Spirit Awards honor independent films made with a budget of no more than $30 million. The awards will be presented during an afternoon luncheon event held inside a tent adjacent to the Santa Monica Pier. “Saturday Night Live” alum Aidy Bryant will host the event.
Competing for the John Cassavetes Award, which honors a film made for less than $1 million, are “The Artifice Girl,” “Cadejo Blanco,” “Fremont,” “Rotting in the Sun” and “The Unknown Country.”
For best first feature, nominees are “All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt,” “Chronicles of a Wandering Saint,” “Earth Mama,” “A Thousand and One” and “Upon Entry.”
The Robert Altman Award, which honors a single film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast, will be presented to “Showing Up.”
On the small screen, “Beef,” “Dreaming Whilst Black,” “I’m a Virgo,” “Jury Duty” and “Slip” are all nominated for best new scripted series. Nominees for best new non-scripted or documentary series are “Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court,” “Dear Mama,” “Murder in Big Horn,” “Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence” and “Wrestlers.”
“Jury Duty” was named the winner of the award for best ensemble cast in a new scripted series.
