Weezer is set to wrap up its “Voyage to the Blue Planet” tour at Acrisure Arena Saturday.
Establishing itself as one of the preeminent rock foursomes of the 1990s and onwards with hits such as “Say It Ain’t So,” ”Buddy Holly” and “Island in the Sun,” the band was formed 32 years ago in Los Angeles by four people, including lead vocalist Rivers Cuomo and drummer Patrick Wilson.
Cuomo, Wilson, guitarist Brian Bell and bass guitarist Scott Shriner have comprised the group’s lineup since 2001.
Weezer’s iconic self-titled debut album, commonly referred to as the Blue Album, was released three decades ago. The project is now RIAA-certified 3x-Platinum, the first of four platinum albums in the band’s output. In addition to its follow-up, 1996’s “Pinkerton,” the Blue Album is often cited as one of the best of the decade — both releases made Rolling Stone’s “100 Best Albums of the ’90s” list.
Many tours, 13 albums and a Grammy win later, Weezer is still going strong. Cuomo has dropped hints about the band’s next album, but he confirmed that it wouldn’t come in 2024 out of respect for the Blue Album’s anniversary.
The “Voyage to the Blue Planet” tour has been a particularly busy journey, consisting of two dozen concerts in the past five weeks. Weezer also played other in-state shows earlier this week in Sacramento (Monday), San Francisco (Tuesday) and Los Angeles (Thursday).
