The addition of a carpool lane along 10 miles of the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass between West Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley has led to reduced traffic congestion, according to a study released Thursday by Metro.
The analysis by System Metrics Group looked at traffic on the 405 Freeway before, during and after the multi-year, $1 billion-plus construction project that included a pair of “Carmageddon” freeway closures and was completed last year.
The study found there were 15 percent fewer accidents and the peak traffic period was cut by two hours. Peak hours prior to the project were from 2 to 9 p.m., and now lasts from 3 to 8 p.m., according to the study.
Travel times are slightly higher now than they were in 2009 during rush hour from 5 to 6 p.m., according to the report.
