A woman who dangled her legs Thursday from the roof of an 18-story building in Sherman Oaks was safely taken into custody.

The dramatic, frightening event drew a crowd to one of the busiest intersections in the San Fernando Valley, and authorities closed off some roadway lanes, jamming traffic throughout the area.

Police and firefighters responded about 3 p.m. to the building in the 4600 block of Sepulveda Boulevard near Ventura Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

A crisis negotiator was summoned and the woman was taken into custody about 3:45 p.m., authorities said.

The emergency prompted the closure of Sepulveda Boulevard between Ventura Boulevard and Dickens Street and at least one lane of Ventura Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

There was no word of the woman’s background, what she told authorities nor her mental state.
