Pope Francis Tuesday named Msgr. Alejandro “Alex” Aclan auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the archdiocese announced.

The pontiff has also named Joseph V. Brennan, auxiliary bishop for the San Fernando Region of the archdiocese, Bishop of Fresno. The appointments were announced in Washington, D.C., at 3 a.m. Pacific time by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States, according to an archdiocesan statement.

Aclan will serve alongside the other four active auxiliary bishops of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles under Archbishop Jose H. Gomez. The appointment makes Aclan the second Filipino-American priest to be named bishop in the United States

Gomez will address the new appointments and present Aclan Tuesday at 10 a.m. inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels at 555 W. Temple Street. Aclan will be available for media interviews following the announcement.

“Bishop-elect Aclan is a man of prayer and he has a true heart for Jesus and a deep concern for the people he is called to serve,” Gomez said. “I know he will be a voice for Filipino Catholics, who are a beautiful sign of growth and renewal in our Church here in Los Angeles and throughout the country.”
