A San Bernardino County woman was killed Friday when the SUV she was driving went off the side of the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Azusa, rolled down an embankment, hit a tree and caught fire.
The crash occurred about 2:15 a.m. near Azusa Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 24-year-old woman, from Rancho Cucamonga, died at the scene, the CHP reported. Her name was withheld, pending notification of her relatives.
Her passenger — 33-year-old Monica Sandoval, also of Rancho Cucamonga — was taken to a hospital for treatment of moderate injuries, the CHP reported.
It’s unclear how fast the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK250 was traveling when it veered off the road.
“The passenger was able to safely exit the vehicle,” according to a CHP statement. “However, the driver was unable to exit the vehicle, and succumbed to (her) injuries as a result of the collision and subsequent fire.”
