Some 100 firefighters needed about two hours Tuesday to extinguish an attic fire at a one-story church — with several firefighters needing treatment for heat-related illness.

Crews responded to the 1500 block of West Glenoaks Boulevard around 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, and the building was evacuated due to the intense flames in the attic, according to Nicholas Prange, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. The crews cut holes in a roof to attack the blaze, Prange said.

“‘During the incident, four firefighters sought medical help from on-scene paramedics due to heat-related illness,” Prange said, adding that three of the firefighters briefly rested and recovered at the scene and continued their efforts.

Prange said the other firefighter was transported to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
