A funeral service is planned for Thursday for a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant who died last month when he and a motorist were struck and killed on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Bel-Air.

Sgt. Shiou Deng, 53, and 34-year-old Jesus Garcia were both killed around 2 a.m. June 23 on the southbound 405 just north of Moraga Drive.

Deng’s funeral is set for Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Forest Lawn – Covina Hills Mausoleum in Covina.

Mayor Karen Bass is among those expected to attend. Bass on Wednesday lauded Deng, “who sacrificed his life providing assistance to others.”

According to the California Highway Patrol, officers from the agency’s West Los Angeles office responded to the southbound freeway just north of Moraga Drive, initially in response to a single-vehicle crash.

“Officers found a Toyota pickup … disabled in the HOV and No. 1 lanes,” according to a CHP statement.

“Shortly after the crash, LAPD Sgt. Shiou Deng arrived in a marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated and stopped behind the Toyota, partially blocking the same lanes. As Sgt. Deng exited his vehicle to assist … a Nissan sedan, driven by Mario Bickham, struck the patrol vehicle and then hit Sgt. Deng.”

Garcia, the driver of the Toyota, was standing outside his vehicle and was also struck. He died at the scene. Deng was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood, where he was pronounced dead.

Bickham was also taken by ambulance to a hospital, but there was no word on his condition.

A GoFundMe page created by Garcia’s family described him as “a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend whose kindness and warmth touched everyone he met.”

According to LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell, Deng stopped to help.

“He saw that it was a serious crash and he activated his rear amber lights in an effort to be able to slow traffic behind him and provide some level of safety for the people who were involved in that collision,” McDonnell said.

McDonnell said the sergeant achieved his current rank two years ago and was assigned to the department’s West Los Angeles Division.

“He’s an exceptional guy,” McDonnell said. “A true leader. A true hero. He had 26 1/2 years on the LAPD. During that time, he spent about 17 of those years working our Mental Evaluation Unit, where he was out there every day caring for the most vulnerable in our society.”

  1. Is this the CHP officer that sat in the middle of the fucking freeway and waiting for somebody to plow into the back of them and kill him because how he was too fucking chicken to take his own fucking life. Is this the card ass fucking piece of shit that couldn’t fucking do his job because hell he went out there and fucking murdered everybody in the fucking State and allowed everybody to get their houses burnt to the fucking ground because how he was incompetent law enforcement in this fucking country. Hell why don’t you go out there and celebrate the LAPD mounted patrol for coming up three fucking years in a fucking road to do the same stupid fucking shit and never pay attention to one fucking review right at what fucking point do you have enough education to pay attention to anything other than the corruption that you have to bring to the fucking town.

  2. A full cocksucking party for the man in the fucking up funeral home. I bet they have every one of the fucking sissies in uniform out there but none of the fucking vehicles to go to the job right. How they never brought a dog or a horse to a fucking funeral. But how the eggs are so fucking worried about the man killing himself in the middle of the freeway though. You should all get the fucking idea this is the way you’re going to go out and this is how it’s going to look on the other end of it.

  3. You really need to have some standards, like other publications, and review comments before posting. Christopher T. Campbell has posted two terribly disrespectful, crazed comments, profanity-laden, against officer who was killed while assisting motorist on freeway. Both officer and motorist were killed, horribly.
This loser Campbell obviously has mental disturbance. Having standards of decency is not censorship. How wrong to publish such trash so that families, friends, fellow officers see this demoralizing content. Time for a welfare check at home of Christopher T. Campbell before he hurts himself. Get him a Roget’s Thesaurus. I am aunt of a police officer. I am about to unsubscribe from your rag.
